L’allumina fusa marrone è un prodotto fabbricato mediante riduzione graduale per fusione della bauxite calcinata in un forno ad arco elettrico ad alta temperatura (circa 2000 gradi Celsius). La sua composizione chimica è costituita principalmente da Al 2 O 3 (94,5-97%) e quantità vestigiali di TiO 2 , SiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , CaO e MgO.
L’ossido di alluminio marrone è caratterizzato da buona tenacità, elevata resistenza meccanica e durezza (9 nella scala di Mohs). La microdurezza del materiale raggiunge circa 1900kG/mm 2 . Il peso specifico (densità) è pari a 3,90+/-0,05 g/cm 3 . La densità apparente a seconda delle dimensioni è pari a 1,52-1,87 g/cm 3 . Ha una conduttività termica relativamente elevata e una bassa dilatazione termica. Per quanto riguarda l’elettricità è un isolante.
